SKS for $175..
I saw an SKS this weekend for $175.Guy said it was a 1944. The price seems low, for a person that grabs top dollar, and some on everything.Where do I go to find out about this rifle, what's good and what to look for..Pawn shop in town asking 325 for one.. First one has been restocked into a sporter..Thank you for your input, cordially Nad

Re: SKS for $175..
First determine the country of origin. Does it have a grenade launcher? Then it is a Yugo. Does it have a star on the receiver? Then it is Russian. Was it imported by Norinco? Then it is Chinese. How modified is it? Does the stock fold or collapse? Is the bayonet present? Is the barrel 20" or 16"? For the price I'd buy it no matter what and figure out the details later.

Re: SKS for $175..
everything you ever wanted to know about the SKS:
http://www.sksboards.com/smf/index.php Check the bore and as along as its not corroded out, buy it! if its a dealer, ask if they ahve a bore scope to look at it iwth. If they dont, then try to find some one that does have one. Old ammo was corrosive so if some one didnt take care of it, it might not be worth the 175$. If you the bore is in any reasonable condition, just get it. Thats a great deal for an SKS these days. |
Re: SKS for $175..
Has a refitted wooden stock that makes it look like an over grown Ruger. No bayonet attachment. I have been looking up and down for info. With my limited knowledge, price seems too low, considering.. Don't really know anything about guns..Last gun I bought was on a yard sale table. Got a single shot 30-30 for ten dollars, and even there , don't know what to do with it, except it was a good? buy....Swappers meet coming up soon, maybe trade it off...Cordially Nad

Re: SKS for $175..
The SKS was not officially introduced for service in the Russian army until 1949. It may be a "1944-type" that is, with a spike bayonet, square gas block, and a spring loaded firing pin. But it wouldn't be marked "1944" on the receiver. If it has a blade bayonet, it was probably made in the later 1950's with the actual date of manufacture marked on the receiver.
If it has a clean, uncorroded bore and overall clean appearance it is well worth $175 (easily double that), especially if it comes with any original extras like box, sling, oiler, cleaning rod, tool kit, ammo, etc. |

Re: SKS for $175..
Very few were made in WWII. I doubt if any survived the Belorussian front in 1944. The ones that made it through are probably in museums somewhere.
Production was on hold from 1944 through 1948, with 1949 the first year of series production of the SKS after full adoption. There was one for sale on gunbroker a while back that was purportedly an original 1944 Russian. Owner was asking more than $7000. |
